Varicose Veins

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged veins that often appear as twisting, bulging veins above the surface of the skin. These veins are caused by a weakening of the valves inside the vein that are responsible for moving blood in a single direction back to the heart. Varicose veins are frequently accompanied by uncomfortable symptoms, including heaviness or achiness of the legs, fatigued legs by the end of the day or swelling in the lower legs, ankles or feet.

Varicose veins are likely a result of chronic venous insufficiency. This condition occurs when the veins cannot efficiently pump blood back to the heart and it begins to pool and reflux in the lower veins. Addressing the cause of the venous insufficiency, including removal of the varicose veins, is the best option in treating the condition.
